Shelley Vance has served Gallatin County for over 40 years, first as Gallatin County Clerk & Recorder and now as State Senator for District 34. Shelley always puts her constituents and the needs of Gallatin County first, not party bossess and special interests.

Meet Shelley Vance

My name is Shelley Vance.  I was born in Bozeman, MT, and raised on a cattle ranch four miles south of the Baxter Hotel.  My sister and I still own the land our parents ranched on where we continue agricultural operations today. Growing up, I participated in 4-H and the MT Junior Hereford Association, and I am a proud graduate of Bozeman Senior High School.

I entered public service in 1981 when I went to work in the Gallatin County Clerk and Recorder's Office. After learning about fair and transparent elections, land records and surveying, the importance of public participation in County Commission and zoning hearings, public finances and the proper use of taxpayer dollars, I ran for the office of the Gallatin County Clerk and Recorder/Surveyor in 1988.

I won that election – and 5 others – and served the people of Gallatin County for the next 18 years.

After my retirement, my husband, Gordy, ran for the Montana Legislature.  He served from 2009 - 2022.  I joined him in Helena, serving as temporary Legislative staff during legislative sessions and attending his interim Transportation and Business & Labor committee meetings.

I was proudly elected in 2022 to serve my constituents in Senate District 34, and I’m running for re-election so that Gallatin County and Senate District 34 has strong conservative leadership and a Senator who always puts her constituents first.

Standing Up for Law Enforcement

Shelley Vance is a staunch defender of law enforcement officers - from Highway Patrol to County Sheriff Deputies to City Police Officers - who are on the front lines of keeping our communities safe. Shelley is known as a leader who puts action behind her words. Serving on the Senate Public Safety committee, Shelley is working to attract and retain law enforcement officers in our community and supports strong drug and immigration enforcement.

Keeping Our Elections Secure

A former Clerk & Recorder, Shelley Vance works to ensure our elections are fair, transparent, and secure.

Fighting for Lower Taxes

Shelley Vance supported Governor Gianforte’s property tax cuts, which reduced property taxes for more than 80% of Montanans.

She voted a fiscally responsible state budget that grew by less than 1%, far below inflation and among the lowest in the country.

Putting Gallatin County First

Shelley takes the responsibility of representing Gallatin County seriously and will always put the interests of her constituents first, not party bosses and special interests.

Shelley will fight to improve access to high quality vocational training and apprenticeship programs to give more opportunity to kids who aren’t going to college.

Shelley introduced and supported bills to help fast-growing cities like Belgrade address challenges like infrastructure and housing, keeping our community more affordable.

And Shelley will always put her constituents first and stand up to party bosses and out-of-state special interests who are pushing their own agenda at Montana’s expense.

Strong Conservative Leadership for Gallatin County

  • "Shelley and Gordy became dear friends to Christie and me during my time in the legislature. In the Senate, Shelley's been a solid supporter of law enforcement as a member of the Senate Finance and Claims subcommittee overseeing the Montana Department of Justice's budget."

    — Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen

  • "It is all too common for lawmakers to say they “Back the Blue” during their campaigns and then waver when the time comes to make the tough votes that actually support law enforcement.  By supporting SB 7, Senator Vance has shown that she stands with Montana’s law enforcement officers. Sen. Vance backs the blue and backs the badge—not just in words but through meaningful action."

  • "Dear Shelley ... The Montana Professional Firefighters saw firsthand the leadership and steadfast approach that you have exhibited in the Montana Senate. You have placed the citizens of Belgrade and Gallatin County above politics. You fought to ensure Montana’s were allowed property tax relief, helping to make our communities more affordable for working Montanan’s. You have worked hard in Helena to protect the rights of Firefighters, allowing us to perform our duties in a safe and effective manner."
